Air Quality Alert issued July 2 at 3:38PM EDT by NWS Gray ME

3:38 PM — July 6th, 12:00 AM

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Bureau of Air Quality has issued an Air Quality Alert for particle pollution from midnight tonight to midnight EDT Sunday night. Particle pollution levels are expected to rise into the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range periodically during the weekend. People are advised to follow the health message if visibility is poor or they can smell smoke. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, the elderly, those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma, those with heart disease and anyone who is working hard outdoors. It is okay to be active outdoors. But if you experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, throat irritation or an uncomfortable sensation in your chest please consider limiting the intensity and duration of your outdoor activities. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so Maine residents can stay informed on the air quality situations. The toll free number is: 1-800-223-1196. Additionally the Maine Department of Environmental Protection has the air quality forecast available on the web at www.maine.gov/dep/air/aqforecast.

About

Lake St. George State Park campground is set on the undeveloped northwest shore of Lake St. George, a clear-water lake known for landlocked salmon and brook trout. Many campsites are positioned directly on the shoreline, and each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. The adjacent day-use area features a swimming beach staffed by lifeguards from mid-June through mid-August, along with picnic tables, grills, a playground, and courts for volleyball and basketball. Boaters have access to a trailered boat launch and can rent canoes, paddle boats, or kayaks to explore the lake's quiet coves. The 1.5-mile Old Jeep Trail provides a moderate-to-difficult hiking option through the surrounding forest. In winter the park connects to 17 miles of groomed snowmobile trails leading to Frye Mountain, and anglers can ice fish the lake. The park is located 16 miles west of Belfast and 25 miles east of Augusta on Maine Route 3, making it an accessible base for exploring Waldo County.
