Air Quality Alert issued July 2 at 3:15PM EDT by NWS Caribou ME

3:15 PM — July 6th, 12:00 AM

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Bureau of Air Quality has issued an Air Quality Alert for particle pollution from midnight tonight to midnight EDT Sunday night. Particle pollution levels are expected to rise into the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range periodically during the weekend. People are advised to follow the health message if visibility is poor or they can smell smoke. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, older adults, those who work outdoors, those with pre-existing respiratory problems such as asthma, and those with heart disease. It is okay to be active outdoors. But if you experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, throat irritation or an uncomfortable sensation in your chest, please consider limiting the intensity and duration of your outdoor activities. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so Maine residents can stay informed on the air quality situations. The toll free number is: 1-800-223-1196. Additionally the Maine Department of Environmental Protection has the air quality forecast available on the web at www.maine.gov/dep/air/aqforecast.

About

Cobscook Bay State Park sits on an 888-acre peninsula surrounded on three sides by the waters of Cobscook Bay, home to some of the most extreme tidal fluctuations on the Atlantic coast. The bay's name derives from the Maliseet-Passamaquoddy word meaning "boiling tides," and the 24-foot tidal range creates a dynamic ecosystem that attracts seals, bald eagles, ospreys, and migratory shorebirds. The campground offers 106 sites for tents and RVs, with many premier waterfront locations along Whiting Bay. A newly constructed bathhouse provides flush toilets, hot showers, and drinking water. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with firewood available for purchase in the park. Two group camping areas accommodate parties of 12 and 30 campers respectively. The park serves as an excellent base for exploring Washington County's remote Downeast coast. Two easy hiking trails wind through the property, and the boat launch provides access to Cobscook Bay for experienced paddlers and boaters comfortable with strong tidal currents.
