About

Sam Tobias Memorial Group Campground sits in a meadow setting within Lincoln National Forest, just minutes from Ruidoso, New Mexico. Originally known as Cedar Creek Campground, it was renamed in 2000 to honor local firefighter Sam Tobias who died in the line of duty that summer. The facility caters exclusively to groups and requires advance reservations through Recreation.gov. Three group campsites are available, designed for 60, 80, and 100 person capacities respectively. All sites are wheelchair accessible and include covered pavilions with paved parking, multiple picnic tables, campfire pits, and charcoal grills. Electric hookups are available at all three camping sites. Vault toilets serve the area, though potable water is not available on-site so groups must bring their own supply. The campground provides access to the Cedar Creek Trail System, including the T90 fitness trail extending 1.3 miles, along with mountain biking trails and forest roads for hiking. The adjacent day-use picnic shelter accommodates up to 40 people for day-use events only. A 14-day stay limit applies, and RVs are limited to 40 feet maximum length.

Directions

From Ruidoso on Mechem Drive, take Cedar Creek Road (Forest Road 88) west approximately half a mile. The campground is the second set of facilities on the right (north side), adjacent to the Smokey Bear Ranger Station.
