About

Round The Mountain Dispersed Campground and Trailhead sits at 5,200 feet elevation in the oak woodlands of the Pinaleño Mountains within Coronado National Forest. The site functions primarily as a staging area for horseback riders and backpackers accessing the Round the Mountain Trail #302, which traverses the mountain range. Horse corrals are available for equestrians bringing their animals. This is a primitive dispersed camping area with no developed facilities. There are no restrooms, no potable water, and no trash service. Campers must pack out all garbage and bring their own water supply. The access road (AZ 366/Swift Trail) has significant switchbacks, making vehicles or trailers longer than 22 feet inadvisable. A forest-wide 14-day camping limit applies.

Directions

From Safford: Drive 8 miles south on US 191, then turn right onto AZ 366 (Swift Trail) and continue 7.6 miles southwest to the trailhead on the right. From Tucson: Take I-10 east for 90 miles to exit 352 (US 191), turn left toward Safford and drive 26.3 miles north, then turn left on AZ 366 and continue 7.6 miles to the site.
