About
Pond Pitch Campsite is a primitive backcountry campsite set along the scenic East Branch of the Penobscot River in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. This remote site is located approximately 3 miles south of Haskell Gate and is accessible only via the International Appalachian Trail on foot or bike, or by paddling the East Branch. The site offers solitude and immersion in Maine's northern wilderness with views of Pond Pitch and the river. The campsite is equipped with a fire pit and picnic table, providing basic amenities for tent camping. There is no potable water, no toilets, and no vehicle access. Campers must be self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles by carrying out all trash and waste. Campfires require a free Maine Forest Service campfire permit, which can be obtained by contacting the Maine Forest Service Northern Region. Untreated firewood from out of state is prohibited to prevent the spread of invasive species. This free campsite requires a reservation through Recreation.gov and is best suited for experienced backcountry campers prepared for remote conditions. Winter camping is possible but requires advanced winter skills and preparation for harsh northern Maine weather.
