Special Weather Statement issued May 24 at 5:55AM EDT by NWS Caribou ME

5:55 AM — 8:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures this weekend in the mid 60s to low 70s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only around 50 degrees on Moosehead Lake and in the middle to upper 50s on smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. According to the Maine Warden Service, when the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could lose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket!

About

Haskell Hut offers a true backcountry winter experience in Maine's Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. The small log cabin sits on a hill with views of Haskell Deadwater along the East Branch Penobscot River. The hut features six bunk beds with wooden sleeping platforms, a wood stove with split firewood provided, and limited cookware. A pit toilet with toilet paper is available nearby. This is a primitive camping experience requiring full self-sufficiency. There is no potable water; visitors must filter water from nearby streams or melt and treat snow. No electricity, lighting, cell service, or trash service exists. All trash, food scraps, and waste must be packed out following Leave No Trace principles. Guests must bring their own sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cook stove, fuel, and all provisions. Access is via a 5.5-mile trail from the North Gate parking area on New River Road, following an old logging road with gentle elevation changes. The trail is generally packed and groomed weekly for cross-country skiing during the season, but trails and huts are not patrolled. Visitors should establish emergency protocols and carry satellite communication devices.

Directions

Access from the north entrance via New River Road. Park at the North Gate and ski or snowshoe approximately 5.5 miles south to the hut. The trail follows an old logging road with gentle elevation changes. The hut is located approximately 5 miles south of the North Gate and 1.4 miles south of Haskell Gate.
