Hueco Tanks State Park And Historic Site
Open year-round with water conservation measures in effect due to drought. Campsite water is available. Hot showers and restrooms operational. Reservations strongly recommended due to limited availability. All visitors must watch mandatory orientation video before camping.
About
Located 32 miles northeast of El Paso, Hueco Tanks is named for the natural rock basins (huecos) that collect rainwater in the massive granite formations. These water sources attracted humans for over 10,000 years, and the park protects over 3,000 pictographs representing multiple cultures including Jornada Mogollon, Apache, Kiowa, and Comanche peoples. The park is internationally renowned as one of the best bouldering destinations in North America. The campground sits at the park entrance and offers 16 sites with 50-amp electric hookups and water, plus 4 water-only sites. All sites include picnic tables with restrooms and hot showers nearby. A dump station serves RV campers. No campfires are permitted anywhere in the park to protect the rock art from ash damage. Access to the park is tightly regulated with daily visitor limits. All overnight guests must watch a mandatory orientation video at the interpretive center before proceeding to camp or explore. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made up to three months in advance by phone. Standard stays are limited to three consecutive nights.
