Hueco Tanks State Park And Historic Site

Open — Open daily. Campsites operate first-come, first-served. Reservations are limited to three consecutive nights; extensions may be available by contacting park headquarters.

About

Located in the desert hills of far west Texas near El Paso, Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site offers 20 campsites at one of the Southwest's most significant cultural sites. For thousands of years, people have traveled to these rock formations drawn by natural water-collecting basins (huecos) and the spiritual significance of the landscape. The campground features 16 sites with electric hookups and 4 sites with water only, all equipped with picnic tables and nearby restrooms. The park is primarily a day-use destination known for world-class bouldering and extensive ancient pictographs, with camping limited to support these activities. Campsites are first-come, first-served and reservations are limited to three consecutive nights, though extensions may be possible by checking with park headquarters. All campers must watch an orientation video before accessing the park. The campground provides a convenient base for exploring the self-guided North Mountain area or booking ranger-led tours to view rock art and learn about the area's natural and cultural history. Charcoal and firewood are prohibited throughout the park to protect the ancient rock imagery from ash damage. Pets are restricted to the campground area and designated trails only. The park operates with daily visitor limits to preserve its sensitive archaeological resources, making advance reservations highly recommended during winter and holiday weekends when the park frequently reaches capacity.
