About
Bassam Guard Station is a piece of living history, built around 1911 as part of a network of remote stations used by the first forest rangers and guards on National Forest lands. These hardy early rangers monitored grazing allotments, managed timber harvesting, apprehended poachers, and reported on fire, road, and weather conditions in the backcountry. The cabin has been preserved and made available for public rental, offering visitors a taste of that rugged early 20th-century ranger life. The 14x16-foot rustic cabin sits in a stand of aspens at approximately 9,700 feet elevation, south of Bassam Ridge in the Salida Ranger District. Inside, guests will find a small full-sized bed, dresser, table with two chairs, a two-burner propane stove for cooking, and a wood-burning stove for heat. The cabin sleeps two adults comfortably, with space outside for up to six additional adults in tents or pop-up campers. A metal campfire ring with grill top and picnic table are provided. Water is available from a hand pump, though bringing extra drinking water is recommended. The bunkhouse and barn on the property are off-limits to the public. The location provides excellent access to recreation opportunities throughout the area. The cabin sits near the eastern boundary of Browns Canyon National Monument, which can be explored on foot or by mountain bike. The Arkansas River is a short drive away for world-class whitewater rafting, kayaking, and fishing. Numerous trails and forest roads in the area accommodate hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and OHV use. Horse owners can bring their animals and use portable corrals outside the fenced area. The historic ghost town of St. Elmo is nearby for exploring mining-era history. This is a pack-it-in, pack-it-out facility, and guests should bring all necessary supplies including food, bedding, flashlights, matches, garbage bags, and an ax for firewood.
Directions
From Salida, travel north on Highway 285 to the junction with Highways 24/285 near Johnson's Village. Turn right onto Hwys 24/285, passing through Johnson's Village. Stay on this highway for 5 miles, then watch for a sign on the left for County Road 307 (next to private property with railroad items on display). Turn right onto CR 307 and travel for 1.5 miles to the junction with CR 187. Turn right onto CR 187 and travel south for 7 miles to the intersection with CR 186. Turn left on CR 186 and travel southeast for 0.10 miles. Watch for a two-track road on the left (186 A). This road will take you to the gated entrance to the cabin. Roads may be slippery and muddy after rain or snow; drive with caution. High clearance vehicle recommended.
