About
Aroostook State Park holds the distinction of being Maine's first state park, created in 1939 after citizens of Presque Isle donated 100 acres of land to the state. Today the park has grown to nearly 800 acres through subsequent donations and purchases, situated on Echo Lake off US Route 1 south of Presque Isle. The campground features 30 wooded sites and two group camping areas, all equipped with picnic tables and fire pits. When fully operational, the park offers hot showers, flush toilets, and a kitchen shelter with electricity and running water. Some sites include water and electric hookups. The park does not have a dump station. Hiking trails on Quaggy Jo Mountain provide access to scenic overlooks of Aroostook County. Nearby Haystack Mountain, located 4 miles west on Route 163 near Mapleton, offers an additional 0.5-mile hike with panoramic views.
