...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 11 PM MST THURSDAY... .A two-part weather system will move through the region from late this morning through Thursday evening. The bulk of the precipitation is expected to occur this afternoon into this evening with the snow levels around 7000 to 7500 feet. Given the high moisture content of this first system, snowfall accumulations will be limited to 2 to 6 inches despite the heavier precipitation. The second part of the storm system will result in additional widespread snow developing Thursday through Thursday evening. Snow levels will drop to around 5000 feet by Thursday evening. This system is colder and will be more efficient in producing snowfall. Expect an additional 4 to 8 inches of snowfall above 6000 feet. Total storm total snow accumulations today through Thursday will be 8 to 12 inches above 8000 feet with locally higher amounts at the mountain peaks. Upper Twilight Group Site offers groups a secluded camping experience at 7,400 feet elevation in the Pinaleño Mountains of Coronado National Forest. The campground sits beneath a canopy of ponderosa pine trees along the Swift Trail Scenic Drive, which climbs from 2,900-foot Sonoran Desert to alpine meadows and forests above 9,000 feet. The location provides excellent access to hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking trails throughout the Pinaleño Range. The area is renowned for birding and wildlife viewing due to its diverse habitat zones. Riggs Lake, stocked with trout by Arizona Game & Fish, and the Columbine Visitors Center are accessible via the Swift Trail. The Mount Graham Wilderness Study Area, including 10,720-foot Mount Graham, lies nearby. The site is adjacent to Lower Twilight Group Site and requires reservations through Recreation.gov. Vehicles longer than 22 feet are not recommended due to switchbacks on Highway 366. The group site costs $25 per night plus $5 per vehicle (cash or check). Summer temperatures are pleasant compared to surrounding desert areas. Safford is approximately 45 minutes north on State Route 191.
Directions
From Safford: Take State Route 191 south for 6 miles. Turn right onto State Route 366/Swift Trail and travel 14.5 miles to the Twilight Campground entrance at milepost 128.4, following the road for 1 mile to Upper Twilight Group Site. From Tucson: Take I-10 East for 90 miles to exit 352 for State Route 191, turn left toward Safford. Drive 26.3 miles north and turn left on State Route 366/Swift Trail. Continue 14.5 miles to the campground entrance at milepost 128.4. Vehicles over 22 feet not recommended due to switchbacks.
