About

Upper Ford Ranger Station is a historic Forest Service cabin built in 1926, originally serving as the heart of the Upper Ford Ranger District until 1942. Located near the Yaak River at 2,984 feet elevation in the Purcell Range, this 900-square-foot furnished cabin offers a remote wilderness experience in one of Montana's most isolated corners. The cabin accommodates up to 10 guests with one queen bed, two twin beds, and multiple futons. Amenities include a propane stove, refrigerator, propane heater, table settings for 8, and basic kitchen tools. There is no electricity or plumbing; guests must bring their own drinking water. An outhouse with vault toilet is located nearby. Guests are responsible for packing out all trash and cleaning the cabin before departure. The surrounding Yaak area offers excellent fishing for trout, kokanee salmon, and mountain whitefish. Big game hunting, hiking in the Northwest Peaks Scenic Area, and equestrian trails are nearby. Winter activities include snowmobiling, skiing, and snowshoeing. Be aware that the area is home to grizzly bears and wolves.

Directions

From Troy, Montana, take US Highway 2 west for 9.5 miles to Yaak Highway 508. Follow Yaak Highway 508 for 30 miles north to the town of Yaak. Follow Yaak Road 92 approximately 7 miles to the junction with Upper Ford Road 8025, stay to the right. The cabin is approximately 300 yards from this junction on the right-hand side of the road.
