Treasure Park North sits along the scenic Swift Trail (State Route 366) in southern Arizona's Pinaleño Mountains at 9,000 feet elevation. The picturesque mountain meadow setting in the mixed conifer forest provides a cool escape from the desert heat below and opportunities for viewing wildlife and wildflowers, as well as group camping, hiking, mountain biking and picnicking. The Swift Trail Scenic Drive takes visitors from the Sonoran Desert at 2,900 feet to alpine meadows and forest on the 9,000+ foot ridges, offering access to numerous hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking trails. The area is well-known for birding and wildlife watching due to its diverse habitat. Nearby attractions include Riggs Lake (stocked with trout), the Columbine Visitors Center, and the Mount Graham Wilderness Study Area, which includes 10,720-foot Mount Graham, the tallest mountain in southern Arizona. The location boasts an interesting history. Legend has it that a treasure of stolen gold and silver was buried here by a band of outlaws in the 1850s, who reportedly marked the site with a triangle formed by three colored granite stones, though no buried treasure was ever found.
Directions
From Safford: Take State Route 191 south for 6 miles, turn right onto State Route 366 (Swift Trail) and travel 23 miles to the Treasure Park entrance at Mile Marker 137, following the loop road to the North campsite. From Tucson: Take I-10 east for 90 miles, take exit 352 for State Route 191 and turn left toward Safford. Drive 26.3 miles north and turn left on State Route 366 (Swift Trail), continue for 23 miles to the Treasure Park entrance at Mile Marker 137.
