About
Santa Rosa Island is the second largest of California's Channel Islands at approximately 53,000 acres, offering a landscape of high mountains, deeply cut canyons, grass-covered hills, and 55 miles of undeveloped coastline. Water Canyon Campground is nestled in a canyon to protect visitors from the island's persistent northwest winds. Each of the 15 primitive campsites features a picnic table, food storage box, and sturdy 8-foot wind shelter. Flush toilets and potable water are provided. The island supports remarkable biodiversity including six endemic plant species, over 100 bird species, and the endemic island fox. Visitors can explore the rare Santa Rosa Island Torrey pine grove, one of only two locations in the world where this Pleistocene-era pine survives. The historic Vail and Vickers ranch buildings near Bechers Bay offer a glimpse into the island's ranching past. Water Canyon Beach, with its white sand shores, lies just down canyon from the campground. Camping requires advance planning. The island is accessible only by boat through Island Packers from Ventura Harbor or by air through Channel Islands Aviation from Camarillo. Due to transportation schedules, a minimum 3-day stay is typical. Campers must carry all gear 1.5 miles from the pier (or 0.25 miles from the airstrip) and should bring low-profile tents, extra stakes, and additional food in case weather delays return transportation.
Directions
