About

Backpackers Campground offers a primitive camping experience on the east end of Lake Alpine within the Stanislaus National Forest at 7,400 feet elevation. This walk-in only facility features tent sites in a timbered lodgepole pine and fir forest setting, with vehicle parking available on the adjacent street near the campground entrance. The location is situated between Highway 4 and Pine Marten Campground, just south of the Chickaree Picnic Area. The campground provides access to Lake Alpine's diverse recreational opportunities including fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, paddle-boarding, boating, swimming, and wildlife watching. Multiple trailheads are within walking distance, making this an ideal base camp for backpackers and wilderness enthusiasts. The high alpine setting offers spectacular forest views, though campers should be prepared for cold and potentially wet conditions at any time of year due to the elevation. Nearby amenities include Lake Alpine Lodge with a restaurant, bar, general store, and boat rentals. The area is a short drive from Big Trees State Park, Grover Hot Springs, Mercer Caverns, and the wine country of Calaveras County. Forest Service rangers offer interpretive programs during summer months.
