Encinitas

Overview

Encinitas is a coastal city in San Diego County with approximately 45 acres of beaches and extensive trail systems. All city beaches and trails are currently open, with beach hours from 4am-2am (parking 5am-10pm). Major beach access points include Moonlight Beach (the most popular, with full facilities and year-round lifeguards), Swami's Beach (world-class surf spot), Beacon's Beach, Stonesteps, Grandview, and D Street. Note that Beacon's Beach trail has experienced closures due to landslide activity—check current status before visiting. San Elijo State Beach Campground (just south in Cardiff-by-the-Sea) offers 165+ oceanfront campsites open year-round, though reservations book up to 6 months in advance and fill quickly. The camp store is permanently closed, but full facilities including hot showers, dump station, and beach access remain operational. Be aware: no dogs on beaches (only in campground), no alcohol on beaches, no glass containers or smoking in parks/beaches. Train noise from adjacent tracks is significant at San Elijo campground. For dispersed camping, nearby state beaches and backcountry options exist within 30-45 minutes. Cell service is generally excellent throughout the area.
