Special Weather Statement issued May 24 at 2:21AM EDT by NWS Gray ME

2:21 AM — 12:00 PM

* The warm air temperatures later this Holiday weekend in the mid 60s may cause people to underestimate the dangers of the cold water temperatures which are currently only in the mid 50s across Sebago Lake and Lake Winnipesaukee, and in the mid 50s in the regions smaller lakes and rivers. * The cold water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia to anyone immersed in the water. When the water temperature is below 60 degrees, the average submerged person could loose dexterity within minutes and be unable to accomplish simple tasks. Anyone on small boats, canoes, or kayaks should plan accordingly if recreating this weekend and use extreme caution to avoid this threat. Paddle smart from the start and always wear your life jacket! * Winds will be breezy this afternoon with some gusts up to 25 mph across parts of the area. If boating on large bodies of water, these strong winds can increase the likelihood of overturning your boat, canoe, or kayak due to increased wave heights.

About

Zealand Campground is a small, rustic campground tucked along the Ammonoosuc River in the White Mountain National Forest. With just 11 sites offering a mix of open meadow and partially wooded settings, it provides a quieter alternative to the larger developed campgrounds in the area. Sites are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations, making it a good option for spontaneous trips or as a backup when other campgrounds fill. The campground is ideally situated for exploring the Zealand Valley. The Zealand Trailhead is nearby, providing access to a network of trails including the route to AMC's Zealand Falls Hut, the Appalachian Trail, and the Pemigewasset Wilderness. The hike to Zealand Falls is a moderate 2.8-mile trek that rewards with views of the cascading falls and the opportunity to continue deeper into the backcountry. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with grilling grate. Vault toilets and potable water are available on-site, and trash dumpsters are provided. The campground operates seasonally from mid-May through mid-October, with a nightly fee of $24 per site. Pets are welcome but must remain leashed at all times.

Directions

From the junction of NH Route 3 and NH Route 302 in Twin Mountain, travel east on Route 302 for 2 miles. Turn right onto Zealand Road at the Zealand Campground sign. The campground is 0.5 miles on your right.
