About
Azalea Campground at Hendy Woods State Park offers a peaceful setting among towering redwoods in Mendocino County's Anderson Valley. The campground features 43 sites arranged in a loop formation on a wooded rise near the Big Hendy virgin redwood grove. Unlike coastal redwood parks, Hendy Woods enjoys warmer temperatures and less fog, making it an ideal base for exploring the area's wine country and natural attractions. Each campsite includes a fire pit, picnic table, and bear-proof food locker. The campground provides restrooms with coin-operated showers, drinking water spigots, and a dump station. Most sites accommodate RVs and trailers up to 35 feet, though no hookups are available. Four sites in the Azalea loop are ADA-accessible. Pets are welcome in the campground but must be leashed and are not allowed on trails. The park protects two virgin redwood groves—Big Hendy (80 acres) and Little Hendy (20 acres)—with miles of hiking trails including a wheelchair-accessible Discovery Trail. The Navarro River runs through the park, offering swimming in summer and kayaking in late winter and early spring. Campers can purchase firewood from the camp host or ranger station, as gathering wood is prohibited to protect the forest ecosystem. The park also features interpretive exhibits, Junior Ranger programs, and campfire programs during peak season.
