Nāmakanipaio Campground is located at 4,000 feet elevation in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, approximately 31.5 miles south of Hilo on Highway 11. The campground features a large, open grassy area shaded by tall eucalyptus and native ʻōhiʻa trees. Weather is cool and damp year-round, with daytime temperatures in the 60s to 70s°F and nighttime temperatures dropping to the 30s to low 50s°F. A tent with a quality rainfly and warm clothing are recommended. Amenities include a community restroom building with flush toilets and hot showers (soap and toilet paper provided), potable water, picnic tables, and barbecue pits. Campfires are permitted in the barbecue pits only, and firewood is available for purchase. Cell phone reception is available and trash/recycling collection is provided. The campground offers 16 tent sites that are first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. Tent sites cost $15 per night (plus park entrance fees). Ten rustic one-room wooden cabins are also available by phone reservation through Hawaiʻi Volcanoes Lodge Company. Maximum stay is 7 days. Pets and smoking are not permitted.
