About
Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area sits in a narrow, scenic valley of the Snake River, 26 miles southwest of Valentine in Cherry County. This 3,000-acre reservoir is renowned for some of Nebraska's best fishing, particularly for walleye, muskie, white bass, and crappie, with two modern fish cleaning stations available. The park features multiple campgrounds including Beeds Landing, Boardman Creek, Cedar Bay, and Willow Cove, offering a mix of Electric Plus campsites and basic sites. In 2022, Merritt Reservoir became Nebraska's first International Dark Sky Park, recognized by DarkSky International for its exceptional astronomical viewing conditions free from light pollution. The park has hosted the Nebraska Star Party annually for three decades, drawing professional and amateur astronomers to experience the pristine Sandhills night sky. Boating access is excellent with five public boat ramps and docks located throughout the recreation area. Modern restrooms, showers, and a dump station serve campers. Half of the campsites in Beeds Landing, Boardman Creek, and Cedar Bay can be reserved up to 180 days in advance during peak season, while remaining sites operate first-come, first-served year-round. The adjacent Valentine National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 72,000 acres of additional recreational opportunities. A Nebraska park entry permit is required.
