Located on the western shore of Carlyle Lake in Clinton County, Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area encompasses 3,000 acres of prime recreational land. The Illini Campground serves as the main camping area, with 328 Class A campsites featuring 30 and 50 amp electrical hookups. Most sites sit within easy walking distance of the water, making it ideal for anglers and boaters. The campground also includes 36 Class C sites designated for walk-in tent camping. Facilities include three shower buildings, numerous privy toilets, playground equipment, basketball and sand volleyball courts, and public laundry facilities. A campground store stocks groceries, camping and fishing supplies, firewood, ice, and live bait. A public swimming pool with zero entry operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The park offers over 9 miles of hiking trails, three free public boat ramps, a 40-acre harbor with electric hoists, fish cleaning stations, and an accessible fishing pier at Allen Branch. The area provides excellent fishing for white bass, channel catfish, crappie, and largemouth bass among over 30 species. Hunting opportunities include archery deer, dove, upland game, and a controlled pheasant program. Twenty cottages with kitchenettes are also available for those seeking more amenities.
