About

Dipping Vat Campground occupies a scenic location on the west side of Snow Lake in New Mexico's Gila National Forest. Situated at 7,451 feet elevation, the campground offers a remote high-country experience approximately 52 miles southeast of Reserve via NM Highway 435 and Forest Road 141. The paved access road has many potholes, though a resurfacing project is expected in 2026. The campground provides vault toilets and picnic tables at each site. Potable water is available seasonally, typically from May through October, with the system shut down November 1 to prevent freeze damage. Trash service operates April through November; visitors must pack out trash during winter months. A self-service fee envelope system handles the $10 per night camping fee, with a two-vehicle limit per site and a 14-day stay limit. Snow Lake is stocked with trout in early spring, early summer, and late fall, drawing anglers throughout the season. The remote location provides excellent conditions for night sky viewing. OHV/ATV use, hunting, and saddle/pack animals are prohibited within the campground. Pets must remain leashed.

Directions

From Reserve, NM, travel south on NM Highway 435 to Forest Road 141 for approximately 52 miles to Snow Lake. Forest Road 141 is paved but has numerous potholes.
