About
Coyote Group Campground is a secluded group camping destination in Tahoe National Forest, located on the northeast shore of French Meadows Reservoir near the Middle Fork of the American River. At 5,200 feet elevation and approximately 40 miles from Foresthill, this remote facility offers four group campsites: Black Bear (50 people), Brush Wolf (25 people), Little Wolf (25 people), and Prairie Wolf (25 people). Each site features campfire rings with benches, cooking grills, and picnic tables for serving and eating. The campground provides vault toilets at most sites, with the Black Bear site offering a flush restroom and ADA-accessible facilities. There is no cell phone service in this area, and the nearest services are in Foresthill. Bear-proof food storage is required. Recreation opportunities abound, including fishing and swimming in the Middle Fork American River, boating and canoeing on French Meadows Reservoir (two boat ramps within three miles), and access to hiking trails leading into the Granite Chief Wilderness and the Western States Trail. High-clearance vehicles are recommended; the route is not suitable for motorhomes, RVs, or vehicles towing trailers.
Directions
High clearance vehicles may take Foresthill Rd to the 43 Rd (Robinson Flat Rd) to Mosquito Ridge Rd, snow permitting. Access from Soda Springs and the 43 Rd is not recommended for trucks with trailers, motorhomes/RVs or passenger vehicles that are not high clearance vehicles with four wheel drive.
