About

Ahart Campground is a small, primitive facility located on the tree-covered banks of the Middle Fork of the American River near French Meadows Reservoir, approximately 40 miles from Foresthill in the high Sierra Nevada. The campground features 12 sites nestled in a coniferous forest setting at high elevation, providing a quiet, rustic mountain experience with light usage levels. Visitors are drawn to the area for rugged mountain beauty, fishing opportunities in the river and reservoir, boating access at French Meadows, and proximity to Granite Chief Wilderness for hiking and backcountry exploration. The location offers scenic mountain photography opportunities and access to mountain biking trails. Summer days are warm and pleasant with cool evenings typical of the elevation. Access requires high-clearance vehicles via Mosquito Ridge Road, and the campground is not suitable for large single-unit RVs due to narrow campground roads. The area is remote—last-minute supplies should be purchased in Foresthill. This is bear country, and food storage lockers are provided at each site. Campers must bring their own drinking water as none is available on-site. Some sites may be available first-come, first-served in addition to reservations.

Directions

From Foresthill, drive 36 miles east on Mosquito Ridge Road (Forest Road 96). Campground is on the Middle Fork American River, 1 mile north of French Meadows Reservoir. High clearance vehicles recommended. Access from Soda Springs via the 43 Road is not recommended for trailers, motorhomes, or standard passenger vehicles.
