About

Locally known as Orogrande #1 and 2, this free dispersed campground is located along Forest Road 233 in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, approximately 11.5 miles south of State Highway 14. The campground uniquely occupies both sides of the road, with one side situated on the bank of the Crooked River and the other nestled in the timber. At least three camp pads are available, each equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. The non-river side provides a more intimate setting, ideal for a single family or small group seeking a wooded camping experience. The river side features an open, grassy campsite perfect for those who want direct access to the Crooked River for fishing or relaxing by the water. The campground includes a vault toilet, but no potable water is available; campers should plan to filter or treat water from the river. At an elevation of 4,520 feet, this primitive campground offers a quiet retreat with access to fishing on the Crooked River and OHV road riding opportunities. No fees are charged, and no garbage services are provided—visitors must pack out all trash. The area serves as a gateway to exploring the historic Orogrande mining district and surrounding backcountry.
