A strong and slow moving weather system will impact the region tonight through Sunday. Well above normal atmospheric moisture levels combined with the dynamics from this storm system will provide the potential for heavy rainfall during this period. Thunderstorms embedded in the more general rainfall will have the potential to produce flash flooding, particularly over recent burn scars. * WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible, along with Flash Flooding of recent burn scars. * WHERE...All of South Central Montana, Portions of Southeast Montana, and Sheridan County Wyoming. * WHEN...From 6 PM MDT this evening through Sunday afternoon. * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of creeks and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - 1 to 2.5 inches of rainfall is expected across the watch area tonight through Sunday. Locally heavier totals up to 4 inches are possible where thunderstorm activity is more persistent. - The Robertson Draw, East Side, Elk, and McGhee-Remington burn scars are particularly vulnerable to Flash Flooding and debris flows during the watch period. Jimmy Joe Campground sits along East Rosebud Creek in one of the most scenic drainages of the Beartooth Mountains. This free, 10-site campground offers a primitive camping experience within the Custer Gallatin National Forest, providing direct access to the creek and surrounding wilderness. The East Rosebud drainage is known for its dramatic mountain scenery and serves as a gateway to the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. The campground provides vault toilets (accessible) and some sites include bear-resistant food storage lockers. There is no potable water, trash service, firewood sales, or camp host on site. Campers must bring their own drinking water and pack out all trash. The campground can accommodate trailers up to 30 feet in length, though individual site sizes vary. Several trailheads are accessible from the area, including East Rosebud Trail (#15), Spread Creek Trail (#13), and Phantom Creek Trail (#17). The nearby East Rosebud Lake Campground offers additional camping options in the drainage. The campground fills quickly on summer weekends and holidays, so early afternoon arrival is recommended to secure a site.
Directions
From Red Lodge: Drive north on US Hwy 212 for 2.1 miles. Turn left (west) onto MT-78 and drive 19.7 miles. Turn left (south) onto Roscoe Rd. Drive 2.3 miles, cross the bridge and turn right (south) onto East Rosebud Rd. Drive 6.5 miles until the campground on your right.
