About

Sevenfathom Bay Cabin is a remote 16' x 16' A-frame cabin situated at the head of Sevenfathom Bay on the southwest side of Baranof Island, 22 miles southeast of Sitka, Alaska. Built in April 1991 by local Sitka volunteers, the cabin accommodates up to 8 people with a sleeping loft accessed by vertical ladder, plywood bunks, table and benches, and a wood stove for heat. A mooring buoy is provided for boat anchorage. The cabin is located on nearly flat terrain just outside the South Baranof Wilderness Area, which can be accessed within five minutes by boat. Brown bear frequent the area. Despite the lack of established trails, numerous hiking opportunities exist around the cabin. Saltwater fishing and deer hunting are popular activities in the area. The famous Goddard Hot Springs, featuring soaking tubs maintained by the City and Borough of Sitka, is located about 20 minutes north by boat. This is a true wilderness experience requiring self-sufficiency. Access is only by boat (approximately 1.5 hours from Sitka) or floatplane (approximately 15 minutes from Sitka). Visitors must arrange their own transportation, bring all necessary supplies and amenities, and be prepared for remote conditions. The facility receives minimal maintenance, and firewood may be unavailable. Visitors should consult local tide tables before departure and pack out all garbage.
