About

Kroeger Campground is nestled in beautiful La Plata Canyon in the San Juan National Forest, about 17 miles from Durango via Highway 160 and County Road 124. The 10 campsites are shaded by a mixture of spruce, fir, aspen, and cottonwood trees. One site features a double picnic table with a large parking area, and there is one pull-through site suitable for a longer RV, though the maximum RV length is 25 feet and most sites do not accommodate larger vehicles. Amenities include potable water from a pump, a vault toilet, metal fire grates, and picnic tables at each site. There is no trash pickup, so all garbage must be packed out. Bear-safe food storage is mandatory. Pets are allowed but must be leashed or physically restrained at all times and never left unattended. Horses and pack animals are not permitted. The paved road becomes gravel at the National Forest boundary and access is via 2WD gravel road to the campground, though the road becomes 4WD beyond. The nearby La Plata River offers fair fishing, and trailheads for Taylor Lake and the Highline Loop National Recreational Trail are accessible from the area. Private property borders the campground so campers should stay within designated areas.

Directions

From Durango, travel 12 miles west on US Highway 160. Turn north on County Road 124 (La Plata Canyon Road) at Hesperus. The campground is 5 miles up County Road 124. The paved road turns to gravel at the National Forest boundary. Access to the campground is by 2WD gravel road.
