Devils Tower National Monument

Overview

Devils Tower National Monument in northeastern Wyoming is America's first national monument, established in 1906. The park features the iconic 867-foot volcanic monolith that rises dramatically from the prairie surrounding the Black Hills. The monument is open year-round and returned to 24/7 access in April 2025 after temporary restricted hours (7am-5pm) in March for road repairs. The park is considered sacred by Northern Plains tribes, and climbers are asked to observe a voluntary climbing closure during June to respect Native American ceremonies—this cultural respect protocol has been in place since 1995 and sees about 85% compliance. The monument offers world-class crack climbing with hundreds of routes, as well as the Tower Trail loop, wildlife viewing, and Belle Fourche River Campground (first-come, first-served, 45 sites including 43 pull-through sites). Entry fee is $25 per vehicle or covered by America the Beautiful pass. Visitor center hours are 9am-5pm daily.
