Overview

Tom Green County is located in west-central Texas, anchored by San Angelo. The county manages several parks and recreation areas with camping available at designated locations including Foster Park (along Spring Creek), and areas around the major reservoirs. County parks have a 3-night maximum stay unless approved by Commissioner's Court, and require online reservations through their REC1 system. Camping fees are $6/day for county residents, $12/day for non-residents. The county's major water features include O.C. Fisher Reservoir (currently experiencing extremely low water levels at around 1-2% capacity), Twin Buttes Reservoir (also low but variable), and Lake Nasworthy. Twin Buttes requires a Limited Public Use permit ($12/year) from TPWD for anyone 17+ to fish, hike, camp, or picnic, with only primitive camping allowed. Gates at Twin Buttes are locked after rainfall to protect dirt roads. San Angelo State Park (a TPWD facility on O.C. Fisher Reservoir) offers developed camping with water/electric hookups and mini-cabins. The region is experiencing drought conditions affecting lake levels, which impacts access and recreational opportunities. The area is characteristic of the Edwards Plateau/Concho Country with mesquite and pecan trees, serving as a major hub for the wool and mohair industry.
