About
Swan Cabin is situated near Stratton Bald at approximately 5,341 feet elevation in the Cheoah Ranger District of Nantahala National Forest. Originally built in 1931 by Frank Swan and later moved to its current location, this primitive log cabin offers a peaceful retreat near the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness, known for one of the largest old-growth forests east of the Mississippi. Due to health and safety concerns, occupancy within the cabin is no longer permitted. However, group tent camping in the surrounding meadow is available, and reservation holders have the option to maintain their reservation or cancel for a full refund. The site provides a vault toilet, picnic table, grill, and fire ring. Guests must bring their own drinking water, lanterns, bedding, cooking gear, food, garbage bags, and toilet paper. Several hiking trails are accessible from the cabin, including the 3-mile Swan Meadows Trail and the 7-mile Stratton Bald Trail. A waterfall is a 5-minute walk from the site. The gravel access roads (FS Roads 81 and 81F) are passable with 2WD in ideal conditions but require 4WD when muddy or snow-covered.
