About

Cherry Glen Picnic Area is a day-use facility nestled on a compact 13-acre wooded ridge within the Saylorville Lake Project, which stretches over 50 miles up the Des Moines River Valley. The shaded picnic area provides an ideal setting for family gatherings and relaxation under mature trees. The facility is directly connected to the Neal Smith Trail, a 24-mile paved National Recreation Trail that winds from Des Moines to Big Creek State Park. The trail is popular for biking, hiking, jogging, walking, and in-line skating. Saylorville Lake offers excellent boating, sailing, water skiing, windsurfing, and swimming. Anglers target walleye, wiper, largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and northern pike. Wildlife is abundant throughout the project area. White-tailed deer, turkeys, pheasants, waterfowl, and other small game animals are commonly observed around the lake. The picnic area is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and provides a convenient base for exploring the diverse recreational opportunities at Saylorville Lake.
