Upper Onion Creek Campground is a BLM-managed primitive campground situated along the scenic Highway 128 corridor, approximately 22 miles east of Moab. The setting offers striking views of the Colorado River canyon surrounded by red rock cliffs, towering mesas, and dramatic spires, with the snow-capped La Sal Mountains providing a stunning backdrop. The campground has 14 individual sites available on a first-come, first-served basis, each limited to 10 people and two vehicles. Two group sites (A and B) are available by reservation through Recreation.gov. Group Site A includes a horse corral with access to nearby equestrian trails, while Group Site B accommodates up to 25 people. Both group sites have fire grates, picnic tables, and shade shelters. Located just 0.7 miles off SR 128, the campground provides direct access to the Onion Creek four-wheel drive road. Campers should be aware of flash flood potential during seasonal rains. Generator hours are 8 AM to 8 PM with quiet hours from 10 PM to 6 AM. The town of Moab, roughly 40 minutes away, offers dining, shopping, gear rentals, and all services.
Directions
From the junction of Highway 191 and Highway 128 in Moab, drive east 22 miles along the Colorado River. Turn left across from the Fisher Towers sign and drive 1.5 miles up the gravel road.
