About
Middle Ridge Cabin is a hand-scribed log cabin built in 2009 by University of Alaska Southeast students, constructed from 35- to 40-year-old spruce logs. The 16' x 20' structure sits at approximately 1,500 feet elevation on Wrangell Island, overlooking a small lake surrounded by muskeg and mixed evergreen forest. The cabin features one double bunk, one single bunk, and a full loft (sleeping up to 8), plus a woodstove, wooden table, benches, and counter space. Outdoor amenities include two picnic tables, a campfire ring, tent platform, and woodshed stocked with firewood. An accessible outhouse is located about 40 feet from the cabin. Wheelchair-accessible pathways connect all outdoor facilities except the lake dock. A skiff with oars is provided for use on the lake, though guests must bring their own PFDs. This cabin is unique in the Tongass because it is vehicle-accessible in summer via rough Forest Service roads from Wrangell. The final stretch involves grades exceeding 15% with sharp switchbacks. In winter, access is by snowmobile, ATV, or cross-country skis. Guests must bring all water, cooking equipment, sleeping bags, toilet paper, and lighting. There is no electricity or cell service.
Directions
From Wrangell, drive south 10.5 miles on Zimovia Highway. Turn left on Pats Creek Road (6259) and continue 2.8 miles to Road 50054. Turn right and follow 50054 about 1 mile to Road 50060. Turn right and follow 50060 approximately 3.5 miles to the cabin. Roads 50054 and 50060 are very rough and steep with grades exceeding 15%, sharp switchbacks, and few turnouts. High-clearance vehicles required. RVs, trailers, and low-clearance vehicles are not suitable.
