About

Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Cabins offer a rare opportunity to stay within one of Alaska's most iconic wilderness areas, home to approximately 3,000 Kodiak brown bears and over 400 breeding pairs of bald eagles. The refuge covers 1.9 million acres on Kodiak, Uganik, Ban, and Afognak Islands, encompassing diverse habitats from misty fiords and glacial valleys to tundra, alpine meadows, and Sitka spruce forests. Popular activities include wildlife viewing, fishing for all five species of Pacific salmon on world-class rivers like Uganik, Karluk, and Ayakulik, and hunting elk, Sitka black-tailed deer, mountain goats, and brown bears. All 10 cabins are primitive and require complete self-sufficiency. Each has bunk beds without mattresses, a Nordic-brand heating stove burning kerosene, #1 heating oil, or automotive diesel, a table with chairs, and an exterior cache for supplies or game storage. Pit toilets are provided. Visitors must bring all fuel for heaters, cooking equipment, lighting, food, water, and toiletries. There is no electricity, running water, or trash service. All garbage, unused food, and fuel cans must be packed out. The refuge has a maritime climate with cool, wet, and windy conditions prevailing year-round. Hypothermia is possible in any season without proper waterproof gear, and weather delays for floatplane travel are common. Refuge staff cannot arrange transportation but can provide a list of permitted charter operators.

Directions

No roads or maintained trails exist in the refuge. All cabins are accessible by floatplane. Blue Fox Bay, Uganik Island, and Viekoda Bay cabins are also accessible by boat. Refuge staff cannot arrange transportation but can provide a list of charter operators permitted to transport visitors into the refuge.
