About
Blackhawk Park is the largest public recreation facility on Mississippi River Pool 9, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The campground sits on a scenic, forested bend of the river's main channel, surrounded by cottonwoods, green ash, swamp oaks, river birch, and willows that provide ample shade in summer and vibrant color in fall. The park offers 150 campsites, with 73 featuring electric hookups up to 50 amps. All sites include a picnic table and fire ring. Pull-through sites accommodate rigs up to 80 feet. Facilities include flush toilets and hot showers in the West Camping loop, potable water throughout the park, and an RV dump station. Recreation amenities feature a swimming beach, two boat ramps, two picnic shelters, two playgrounds, a volleyball court, horseshoe pits, and fishing docks. Park rangers offer interpretive programs throughout the summer covering local history, wildlife, and the river environment. The small river towns of De Soto (5 minutes south) and Lansing, Iowa (15 minutes south) offer restaurants and shops. La Crosse is 30 minutes north with additional amenities. Effigy Mounds National Monument lies about 40 minutes south for excellent hiking and scenic views.
