About

Blind Pass Cabin sits on the northwest shore of Hassler Island in the northern Behm Canal area, approximately 40 air miles north of Ketchikan. This secluded pan-abode log cabin, constructed in 1975, is tucked into a sheltered cove surrounded by old-growth forest with views of Blind Pass and densely forested Black Island. Low tides reveal a long beach in front of the cabin, and an adjacent stream provides water that must be treated before use. The 12-by-14-foot cabin sleeps 4-6 people with two single bunks and two double bunks. It includes a table, benches, shelves, cupboard space, a tiny wood stove, and an outhouse. A mooring buoy is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests must bring their own water, food, sleeping bags, cookware, firewood, and all other necessities, and are responsible for packing out all trash. The area is renowned for king salmon runs into the Unuk River, with halibut, red snapper, Dungeness crab, shrimp, and other salmon species abundant. A freshwater lake with trout is located about a half-mile upstream, though no trail exists. Sea kayakers use the cabin as a launching point for exploring Bell Island, Gedney Pass, and Bell Arm, or for kayaking to Bailey Bay to hike to Lake Shelokum Hot Springs. Wildlife includes Sitka black-tailed deer, black bears, wolves, and various waterfowl and marine mammals. Hunting is permitted in designated seasons with proper permits.
