About
Sheep Pass Group Campground sits at 4,500 feet elevation in the central portion of Joshua Tree National Park, making it an ideal base camp for exploring the park's trails and world-class rock climbing. The campground offers six group sites that can accommodate between 10 and 60 people depending on the site. Towering granite boulder formations and distinctive Joshua trees surround the facility, creating the quintessential desert landscape that draws visitors from around the world. This is a primitive campground with vault toilets but no potable water. Campers must bring all water and supplies. The nearest water sources are at the Oasis Visitor Center or West Entrance station, approximately 13-16 miles away. Each site has picnic tables and fire rings, though campfires are prohibited from June 15 through October 1 due to fire danger. Only gas or propane stoves are permitted during the fire ban period. The campground is tent-only. RVs and habitable trailers are prohibited. Reservations are required year-round and can be made up to six months in advance through Recreation.gov. Peak visitation runs from October through May when temperatures are comfortable, while summer is the off-season due to extreme desert heat often exceeding 100°F.
Directions
Take Interstate 10 to Route 62. From the town of Joshua Tree, turn south on Park Boulevard and continue through the West Entrance. The campground is 13 miles from the entrance station. From Twentynine Palms, the campground is 16 miles via Park Boulevard.
