About
Pumice Flat Group Campground occupies a scenic position in the Red's Meadow and Devils Postpile section of the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, just west of Mammoth Lakes, California. At an elevation of 7,700 feet, the campground sits in a lodgepole pine forest adjacent to two creeks. Four well-spaced group sites accommodate parties of 20-50 people, each equipped with large fire rings, picnic tables, and ample parking for multiple vehicles. The campground serves as an excellent base camp for exploring some of the Sierra's most spectacular wilderness. Devils Postpile National Monument and the Ansel Adams Wilderness are nearby, with trailheads accessing the Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail within a few miles. A mandatory shuttle system operates during peak season to reach area trailheads. Fishing for trout is available in the North Fork of the San Joaquin River. Bear activity is historically high at this campground. Bear-proof food storage lockers are provided at each site and must be used for all food and scented items. Bear-proof trash receptacles are also provided. Mosquitoes can be abundant in early to mid-summer.
