Joshua Tree National Park Wilderness Backpacking Permits
Wilderness Permit
Overview
Itinerary-based wilderness backpacking permit for Joshua Tree National Park -- 792,000 acres spanning the Mojave and Colorado Deserts in Southern California, ~85% managed as wilderness. 28 divisions: 14 designated campsites along the Boy Scout Trail (quota of 1 per site -- competitive) and 14 at-large backcountry zones (unlimited quota). Zones are accessed from 13 backcountry trailheads via paved and unpaved roads (some require high-clearance 4WD). Permits required year-round for all overnight wilderness backpacking. Elevation ranges from under 1,000 ft to over 5,800 ft (Quail Mountain). Desert backpacking -- water is the primary limiting factor; carry or cache all water.
Bottom Line
Not a lottery -- rolling 6-month FCFS window on recreation.gov. At-large zones have unlimited quota, so the only competitive inventory is the 14 Boy Scout Trail designated campsites (quota of 1 each). BST sites on weekends in peak season (Oct--Apr, when desert temps are manageable) sell out quickly. For zone camping, permits are essentially guaranteed -- just book before your trip. Same-day permits available online until 11:59 PM or in person at the permit office until 4:00 PM. The $6 fee is 100% non-refundable under all circumstances, so cancellations are less likely to trickle back. Best strategy: set alerts on BST sites for weekend dates; zone permits need no alerts.

Divisions
28 total divisions across two types:
Boy Scout Trail Designated Sites (14) -- quota of 1 per site per night. Backpackers on the BST must camp in a designated site. These are the competitive reservations.
At-Large Backcountry Zones (14) -- unlimited quota. Camp anywhere within the zone, subject to setback rules: 1 mile from any backcountry trailhead, 0.5 miles from any road, 200 feet off any trail. No camping in rock shelters or day-use-only areas.
Zones are accessed from 13 backcountry trailheads. Entry/exit point on the permit = your parking trailhead, not your camping zone.
Rules
- Max 3 consecutive nights in any single campsite or zone; max 14 nights per season
- Carry or cache all water -- surface water is reserved for wildlife. Mark caches with name, contact info, and dates; remove after trip

- Cat holes 6--8 inches deep, 200 ft from water; pack out all toilet paper
