Great Sand Dunes National Park Backcountry Permits
Wilderness Permit
Overview
Itinerary-based backcountry permit for Great Sand Dunes National Park in southern Colorado's San Luis Valley, at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Home to the tallest dunes in North America (over 750 ft). 8 zones across two camping types: Dunes Backcountry (non-designated camping on the dune field itself -- camp anywhere west of the high ridge, 1.5+ miles from Medano Creek bed) and 7 designated Sand Ramp Trail sites (Buck Creek, Escape Dunes, Indian Grove, Little Medano, Aspen, Cold Creek, Sand Creek -- camp within 50 ft of the metal arrowhead post). Permits required year-round. No on-site or walk-up permits available -- online only through recreation.gov.
Bottom Line
Not a lottery -- rolling 3-month FCFS window on recreation.gov. Permits release daily at 7:00 AM PST / 8:00 AM MST / 10:00 AM EST. The Dunes Backcountry zone (camping on the dunes) is by far the most popular option and the most likely to sell out on peak weekends. Each designated Sand Ramp Trail site has limited quota so weekend availability in spring/summer/fall can be competitive. The $6 reservation fee is non-refundable. Modifications allowed up to 7 days before entry date; entry date changes require cancellation and rebooking. Cancellations return quota immediately to recreation.gov, making alerts useful. Once you print your permit, no further changes are possible. Winter trips are possible but conditions are harsh -- water sources freeze and high winds are common.

Plan a minimum of 1 hour to reach the first ridge. Flat, low areas away from vegetation preferred. No bear hang required but Kevlar food bags recommended to deter rodents.

- Buck Creek -- lower elevation, dune views
- Escape Dunes -- pine forest setting near dune edge
- Indian Grove -- mixed forest, privy available, near reliable water (Medano Creek)
- Little Medano -- grassy site, pack animals allowed
- Aspen -- highest elevation site, aspen grove, mountain and dune views, pack animals allowed
