Dinosaur National Monument - Split Mountain Permits

Wilderness Permit

Overview

Day-use river float permit for the Split Mountain Canyon section of the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument, managed by the National Park Service. 9-mile day trip from Rainbow Park boat ramp to Split Mountain boat ramp (division 726). Class III whitewater -- notorious rapids, riffles, and stunning canyon views as the river cuts through Split Mountain. Proposed wilderness -- no motors or vehicles anywhere along the corridor. Primitive camping available at the Rainbow Park launch site (4 sites, 8 people each, no running water, vault toilet). Split Mountain take-out has reservable group campsites, vault toilets year-round, and a seasonal groover dump site. The dinosaur quarry -- with 149-million-year-old bones encased in rock -- is nearby.

Bottom Line

All FCFS, no lottery. Low season: 1 launch per day. High season (mid-May through mid-September): 2 launches per day. Permits are for a single launch on a single day. Each person may hold only 1 permit at a time, but there is no limit on how many 1-day trips you can take per year. The remote launch site and long drive times mean many groups camp at Rainbow Park the night before. Trip leaders must have Class III+ whitewater experience. Cancellation alerts are effective -- cancelled permits return to availability randomly within 24 hours. Check the /api/permits/ endpoint for current availability.
