Overview

Wind Cave National Park in southwestern South Dakota protects one of the world's longest and most complex cave systems with over 168 miles of explored passages, known for its rare boxwork formations. The park is fully open with the surface area accessible 24/7 year-round. After a year-long elevator modernization project, cave tours resumed in late January 2025. Currently, guided tours are the only way to experience the cave—tickets can be reserved up to 3 days in advance through Recreation.gov, though same-day tickets are also available at the visitor center (open daily 8am-4:30pm). Cave tours fill quickly during peak summer months. The park's 33,970 acres of mixed-grass prairie above support wildlife including bison, elk, pronghorn, and prairie dogs. The 62-site Elk Mountain Campground operates year-round, accepting credit/debit cards only. Cave temperature remains a constant 54°F. All tours involve steep stairs, low ceilings, and narrow passages. The park is located on US Highway 385, about 11 miles north of Hot Springs.
