Visitors appreciate the remote and primitive setting within the park's backcountry along with its breath-taking vistas. Groupsite B is located within the backcountry of Elk Knob State Park at an elevation of 4000 ft. Campers experience the remoteness of the backcountry as they view plants and animals along the headwaters of the New River. The site is fully exposed to sunlight and provides little shade.Brochure Info - RecreationElk Knob State Park is known for its spectacular hiking trails and vistas from the summit of Elk Knob. Trout fishing is permitted within the headwaters of the New River and posted trout waters exist adjacent to park property. Bird watching is popular as the park is home to the Golden-winged Warbler. Plan B country store is a ten minute drive from the park and will provide small food items. Lowes Food is a fifteen minute drive to Boone from the park and will offer additional camping related items. The closest restaurant is in Boone.Brochure Info - Facilities and RestrictionsThe only associated facility is the pit privy which is located centrally between the two group sites.Brochure Info - Nearby AttractionsElk Knob State Park offers four hiking trails totaling 5.5 miles. The park also offers a zone camp, three primitive backpack family campsites, a picnic area, an amphitheater, a park office and gift shop. Educational programs are offered most weekends.Key Info Hike-in camping for tents and/or hammocks only. One group of 7-25 campers only. Campers should park and sign in at the Backcountry Trailhead PVA before hiking two miles to their site. The gate is locked at night per the posted gate hours. Campers should dial 911 during an emergency. Cell service is poor near the site. Electricity and water are not available on the site. Bears frequent this area. All food and scented items must be moved into the bear box located on the campsite. All trash and food items must be removed from campsite. Fires are not permitted other than a cook stove. Dogs must be on a six foot leash at all times. Firearms are not permitted without a valid conceal carry permit. Alcohol is not permitted. Water is available from streams and should be treated before drinking. Campsite is primitive but does have a pit privy. The front gate is closed and locked at posted closing times for your protection. There will be no exiting or entering the gate after this time and the combination will NOT be given out. All visitors not spending the night will need to be out by closing time. If you leave the park and do not return before closing time, you will not be able to re-enter.
