About

San Mateo Campground sits a short distance inland from 3.5 miles of sandy beaches at San Onofre State Beach. The campground features both standard sites and RV hookup sites with electricity and water, hot indoor showers, and flush toilets. A 1.5-mile Nature Trail connects the campground to Trestles Beach, one of the world's premier surfing destinations where surfers have been visiting since at least the 1940s. San Mateo Creek flows just east of the campground, creating riparian and wetland habitats that host rare and endangered species. The park is located within the ancestral lands of the Acjachemen people, near the site of Panhe, an ancient sacred village over 8,000 years old. The location offers access to excellent surfing, swimming, hiking, and wildlife viewing, with whales, dolphins, and sea lions visible offshore throughout the year. The campground operates year-round and is one of California's most visited state parks, hosting nearly 2.5 million visitors annually. With proximity to San Clemente and access to world-class surf breaks, this campground books up quickly, especially during summer months.
