Some trails in the park are currently closed due to storm damage; the Fern Canyon Trail to the waterfall remains accessible.

The group camping area at Russian Gulch State Park provides an ideal basecamp for organizations and families looking to explore California's rugged Mendocino coastline together. Located approximately two miles north of the town of Mendocino along Highway 1, the park encompasses 1,305 acres of diverse terrain including coastal bluffs, a protected beach cove, and a lush inland canyon carved by Russian Gulch Creek. The group site provides access to a wheelchair-accessible recreation hall equipped with a kitchen, fireplace, and restrooms. Food lockers are provided to secure provisions from wildlife. The park's Fern Canyon Trail leads 2.5 miles through second-growth redwood and fir forest along the creek to a seasonal 36-foot waterfall. Visitors can also explore the rocky headland and tidal areas, including the Devil's Punchbowl, a collapsed sea cave visible from an overlook. Beyond camping, the park supports activities including hiking, mountain biking on the paved Fern Canyon bicycle trail, diving and snorkeling in the marine conservation area, and seasonal kayaking. The nearby town of Mendocino offers dining, galleries, and supplies.
