About
The Summit Ranger District manages numerous campgrounds along the Highway 108 corridor in California's Stanislaus National Forest. Located in the Central Sierras at elevations that receive significant winter snowfall, these campgrounds provide access to stunning alpine scenery, abundant fishing opportunities in 78 lakes and hundreds of miles of streams, and extensive hiking trails. The district spans 898,000 acres and offers diverse camping experiences from developed sites to dispersed camping areas. Highway 108 traverses Sonora Pass at 9,628 feet elevation, one of the highest paved Sierra passes, making this a prime destination for summer mountain recreation. Campground facilities vary across the district, but visitors should note that some locations cannot accommodate large recreational vehicles due to narrow roads and tight turns. The area is particularly popular during summer months when the high country is accessible and temperatures are moderate.
