About

Shaw House is a unique stone masonry cabin situated in the spectacular East Cochise Stronghold area of the Dragoon Mountains within Coronado National Forest. This historic eight-room residence can accommodate up to 10 guests and provides a comfortable year-round lodging experience with modern amenities including electricity, running water, and climate control. The cabin features three bedrooms: a master with a queen-size bed, a second bedroom with two twin-over-double bunk beds, and a third bedroom with a double-sized futon. The living room contains two full-sized futons for additional sleeping capacity. Two full bathrooms with showers, sinks, and toilets serve the residence. The fully equipped kitchen includes a stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator, and all necessary cookware and utensils. The dining room seats six, and a screened porch offers a comfortable outdoor space. Outside, guests can enjoy a propane grill and picnic table. The surrounding landscape is defined by rugged granite formations, wooded slopes, and seasonal streams. The Dragoon Mountains form a protective rampart of granite spires, sheer cliffs, and balanced boulders that once served as refuge for Apache Chief Cochise. The Cochise Stronghold area is renowned as one of the premier rock climbing and bouldering destinations in the Southwest, with routes ranging from 5.6 to 5.12 in difficulty. Nearby trails provide excellent hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding opportunities, with signed interpretive trails for natural and cultural resources at the adjacent Cochise Stronghold Campground. Wildlife is abundant, including white-tailed and mule deer, wild turkeys, and various other species. Access is through a locked gate with combination provided upon reservation.

Directions

From Tucson, take I-10 east to Exit 318 (Dragoon Road). Turn right onto Dragoon Road and travel approximately 10 miles to Cochise Stronghold Road. Turn right on Cochise Stronghold Road and travel approximately 6 miles to Ironwood Road. Turn right on Ironwood Road and travel approximately 4 miles. Shaw House is the large rock house located off to the left of Ironwood Road behind a locked gate.
