About

Mallard Slough Cabin is a modified A-frame structure built in 1980, situated on the mainland between LeConte Bay and the North Arm of the Stikine River. The cabin features two single bunks (one with a trundle bed), a second-floor loft sleeping up to 7 people total, a wood stove for heating, table with benches, and an exterior outhouse. A wooden cooler box attached to the cabin provides food storage in bear country. The surrounding area offers exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing, particularly during spring and fall shorebird migrations when the Stikine tidal flats serve as a major stopover. The 2.7-mile Mallard Slough Trail begins behind the cabin and leads to LeConte Bay, where icebergs and LeConte Glacier can be viewed by boat at high tide. Brown and black bears, moose, bald eagles, and numerous waterfowl inhabit the area. This is a primitive backcountry cabin with no electricity, potable water, or cell service. Guests must bring all supplies including firewood, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, water, food, toilet paper, garbage bags, and a fire extinguisher. Water from rain catchment must be treated before use. The cabin is located within designated wilderness, so helicopter access is prohibited.

Directions

Located on the mainland 22 miles north of Wrangell on the Stikine River delta, between LeConte Bay and the North Arm of the Stikine River. Accessible by float plane (requires 16+ ft tide) or shallow draft boat (requires 14+ ft tide), 18 miles by air or 20-22 miles by boat from Wrangell or Petersburg.
