The cabin is currently closed. Typically accessible mid-May through November when the lake is ice-free. Floatplanes cannot land when the lake surface is frozen in fall, winter, and early spring. Reservations available through Recreation.gov.

Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to start Friday and last through the weekend as multiple strong low pressure systems move into the northern gulf. These lows will bring multiple days of moderate to heavy rain, with around 1.5 to 3 inches of rain every 24 hours. Some areas, especially near Yakutat and along the gulf coast, could see localized areas reach around 4 inches of rain in 24 hours. Heaviest rain rates are anticipated late Saturday into Sunday with hourly rates of 0.15 to 0.3 inches possible. This heavy rain will likely cause rapid river rises along smaller rivers and streams, but no flooding is expected at this time. Along with this heavy rain, increased winds are highly likely across the area. Strongest winds are anticipated to occur late Saturday into Sunday with 30 to 40 kts, gusts to 50 kts across the gulf and 20 to 35 kts, gusts around 40 to 50 kts across the northern inner channels. Land winds will also increase, with areas especially along the gulf coast seeing wind gusts up to around 45 mph. Check back for more updates through the weekend.

About
Kathleen Lake Cabin sits on level ground within steps of a small beach at the east end of Kathleen Lake on Admiralty Island. This A-frame cedar log cabin provides basic shelter in a remote wilderness setting, featuring wooden bunkbeds for up to 6 people, a sleeping loft, oil stove, cooking counter with shelves, and table with benches. An outhouse is located outside. A skiff with oars is provided for exploring the lake. The surrounding landscape features dense spruce and hemlock forests, glacier-fed streams, and muskeg, with rocky glacier-capped peaks in the distance. Much of the area around the cabin is private Shee Atika Corporation land that has been clearcut, creating a patchwork pattern of logged and unlogged areas. A permit from Shee Atika Corporation is required to hike beyond the immediate cabin area. Anglers can fish for rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and northern pike. Wildlife viewing opportunities include Sitka black-tailed deer, bald eagles, and brown bears, which are abundant in the area. Visitors may bring a small outboard motor (under 10 horsepower due to wilderness regulations) and must bring personal flotation devices.
Directions
Access is by floatplane only, approximately 30 minutes from Juneau. The cabin is located on the west side of Admiralty Island at the east end of Kathleen Lake. Visitors are responsible for arranging their own air transportation. Refer to USGS topographic maps Sitka D-2 and D-3.
