About
Ravens Roost Cabin is a custom-built alpine cabin located at 1,745 feet elevation on Mitkof Island in southeast Alaska's Tongass National Forest. It is the only Forest Service cabin accessible by trail from Petersburg. The cabin sits atop a mountain above Petersburg Airport, surrounded by flat muskeg terrain with steep mountain slopes beyond, offering scenic views of the Wrangell Narrows and Kupreanof Island to the west. The 16x20-foot cabin features wooden bunks on the main floor, a sleeping loft, a covered deck, and a table and benches. It was designed with door access through the loft to accommodate periods of deep winter snow. An outhouse with a pit toilet is located nearby. The cabin can be reached via the Raven Trail, a steep 4.2-mile hike with 1,800 feet of elevation gain starting from the water towers behind the airport, or by helicopter (3 miles). The area is popular year-round for cross-country skiing, telemark skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling in winter, while summer brings wildflowers and berry picking opportunities. Wildlife including eagles, moose, deer, porcupines, and black bears can be spotted in the area. A winter ski trail south of the cabin links to Twin Creeks Road. Fresh water must be sourced from nearby ponds, muskeg pools, or melted snow and treated before consumption.
