About
Ravens Roost Cabin sits atop the mountain above Petersburg Airport on Mitkof Island in southeast Alaska's Tongass National Forest. At 1,745 feet elevation, this custom-built alpine cabin offers sweeping views of Wrangell Narrows and Kupreanof Island to the west. The 16'x20' structure includes wooden bunks on the main floor, a sleeping loft that comfortably accommodates six to eight people, and a covered deck. Access requires either a helicopter flight or a demanding 4-mile hike on Raven Trail, which gains 1,800 feet in elevation. The first mile is moderate, the middle section very steep, and the final mile flattens along the ridge top. Allow approximately 3 hours for the ascent. The cabin is equipped with a propane heater and has an outhouse with a pit toilet nearby. The area attracts winter recreationists including snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, telemark skiers, and snowshoers. Summer brings blooming wildflowers and berry picking opportunities in the surrounding muskeg. Wildlife viewing is excellent, with eagles, moose, deer, porcupines, and black bears frequenting the area.
Directions
Access via helicopter or the 4-mile Raven Trail. The trailhead is located at the water towers behind Petersburg Airport near Sandy Beach. The first mile is moderate, the middle section is very steep, and the final mile flattens along the ridge top. Allow 3 hours for ascent.
